By
dividing your stomach into two very different
sections with the help of an adjustable gastric
band. Normally your stomach can hold about one
litre of food. You will remain hungry until it
is full up. The band placed around the uppermost
part of your stomach, where food comes in directly,
will create a pouch of 15 ml (the size of a clementine)
this pouch will then be very quickly filled by
food and induce an early feeling of fullness thereby
decreasing the quantity of food intake.
You do not feel hungry for a longer time by eating
less since the small upper pouch will empty very
slowly through the small hole created by the band.
The band is placed not inflated and its size is
then about two cm. By inflating it via a small
port placed under the skin we can adjust its size.
The advantages of this operation called GASTROPLASTY
(which means modification of the shape of the
stomach) are numerous :
- the operation is simple
- the stomach will basically not be modified permitting
to revert back to the original stage if necessary
- after the operation it is very easy to adjust
the diameter of the gastric band
