The
check-up before the operation may seem
a bit long, however, it helps the patient to gradually
understand the procedure and to different doctors
who will follow him to know him better.
Visits :
- A visit with a surgeon to confirm the diagnosis
and to explain the different surgical methods,
their advantages and risks.
- A visit to a nutritionist in order to study
old eating habits and find new ones.
- A visit to a psychiatrist to clear up pre-existing
problems.
Blood test :
- To find out any metabolic problem : The
onset of diabetes, Increased levels off cholesterol
or fatty substances, uric acid, underactive thyroid
(which may cause obesity and is tested by checking
TS.H. hormone. We also check the level of cortisol
to see if there are potential problems with your
adrenal glands.
Other investigations :
- An X-ray or endoscopy of your stomach to
detect hiatus hernia. This helps the surgeon to
modify the operating technique.
- The surgeon and anaesthetist may ask for other
tests prior to the operation e.g. ECG, ultra sound
scan of gall-bladder, lung function tests.
- Please note that you will need to meet with
an anaesthetist 48 hours before surgery. This
is a legal requirement and cannot be changed.
